Heteroatom-Doped Carbon Supports with Enhanced Corrosion Resistance in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

نویسندگان

چکیده

Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are currently considered the most advanced fuel cell technology. However, industrial implementation of PEMFCs is strongly hindered by deficient durability, especially that carbonaceous materials commonly used to support platinum-based catalyst nanoparticles, which prone electrochemical corrosion at cathode, resulting in a serious performance loss entire cell. In attempt overcome this issue, many research groups have tried introduce heteroatoms (N, S, B, P) into carbon lattice, thus trying make electrode corrosion-resistant. Newly developed heteroatom-doped carbons were subjected tests half-cell and single-cell systems evaluate their stability. This paper reviews recent studies devoted supports for Pt-based catalysts PEMFCs. particular, an overview on N, S dopants effects provided.

Catalyst supports for polymer electrolyte fuel cells.

A major challenge in obtaining long-term durability in fuel cells is to discover catalyst supports that do not corrode, or corrode much more slowly than the current carbon blacks used in today's polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. Such materials must be sufficiently stable at low pH (acidic conditions) and high potential, in contact with the polymer membrane and under exposure to hydrogen ...

Metallic plate corrosion and uptake of corrosion products by nafion in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells.

Nafion contamination by ferrous-alloy corrosion products, resulting in dramatic drops of the Ohmic potential, is a suspected major failure mode of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells that make use of metallic bipolar plates. This study demonstrates the potential of scanning transmission X-ray microscopy combined with X-ray absorption and fluorescence microspectroscopy for exploring corrosio...

Numerical analysis of reactant transport in the novel tubular polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

In present work, numerical analysis of three novel PEM fuel cells with tubular geometry was conducted. Tree different cross section was considered for PEM, namely: circular, square and triangular. Similar boundary and operational conditions is applied for all the geometries. At first, the obtained polarization curve for basic architecture fuel cells was validated with experimental data and then...

Application of carbon nanotubes in polymer electrolyte based fuel cells

Polymer electrolyte based fuel cells (PEFCs) are always in the forefront of fuel cell revolution. Recently a wide variety of application of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in PEFC components has been exploited. The impetus is to improve the PEFC performance by taking advantages of CNTs’ extraordinary physical, chemical and electronic properties. Herein, we briefly review these efforts with an attempt t...

Drops, Slugs, and Flooding in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells

The process of flooding has been examined with a single-channel fuel cell that permits direct observation of liquid water motion and local current density. As product water flows through the largest pores in the hydrophobic GDL, drops detach from the surface, aggregate, and form slugs. Flooding in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells occurs when liquid water slugs accumulate in the gas...
